Teacher to Tutor: Everything You Need to Know

    19 May 2026 · 5 min read · By Harriet

Going from teacher to tutor is one of the smoothest career changes I've ever seen — when it's done properly. Here's the high-level overview of what you actually need to know.

What carries over (more than you think)

Your subject knowledge. Your behaviour management. Your ability to read a child in 30 seconds. Your differentiation. Your assessment instinct. These are the skills tutoring parents pay a premium for — and most non-teacher tutors simply don't have them.

You are not starting from zero. You are starting from miles ahead of every untrained tutor on the market.

What you actually need before you start

Less than you'd assume. Insurance. HMRC registration as self-employed. A clear niche. A simple way for parents to pay you. That's roughly it. You don't need a website. You don't need a brand. You don't need an Instagram.

The teachers who spend six months 'getting ready' are the ones who never start. The teachers who start within two weeks are the ones earning within a month.

    What nobody warns you about

Tutoring children one-by-one all evening is exhausting and won't scale. Almost every successful tutor reaches a ceiling here and gives up — or switches models. The model switch is the single biggest unlock in this industry and most teachers don't know it exists.
